ST. STEPHEN’S DAY IN BUDAPEST
On 20th August, is celebrating one of the most important public’s days in Budapest.
At the beginning of century XI, Esteban I, who was the first king who got that the mangiar tribes had been united.
In 1803 St Stephen he was canonized in St Stephen Basilica, where it is the relic of his right hand.
The Hungarian people have a lot of devotion about this relic, because its means is important for them. Although St Stephan died in his bed, so the horse is representing with his for pawns in the floor.
For this reason, this day has been become in the national day in Hungary.
All 20th August the people going out to the street for celebrate, and they doing different actions:
- They hoist the Hungarian flag next to the official consecration the Hungarian army, in Kossuth square (in front of parliament)
- There is a gastronomic contest, where you could find cakes or bread. One of these will become in the best of the country.
- Also, in the Buda castle there are craft fairs.
- In the night, over the Danube River, at the height of the chain bridge, you could show the beautiful fireworks.
Finally, if you are interesting in visiting the Parliament, only on this day you could entry for free, because is an “open day”.
